Just installed version 1.1.1 and it certainly is faster at listing albums and artists. A lot of Artists do not have images associated with them and I don't know if they did with the previous version.
Can you confirm these are artists you don't follow, but of whom you added an album to your library?
It's the reason why I do cache the artist picture info: artists queries would return them. But album queries don't. And as I don't get "my" artists I don't follow, but of whom I have an album in my library, I have to find them by querying my albums. Which don't include the artwork. Confused? Me, too. :-)
