The network share way is a good idea! I could attach the USB HDD directly to the router. However, the Raspi used to stream the vinyl can only access the network via wifi (the one I use now as the main LMS is attached via ethernet) - not sure whether this would be a disadvantage, but for sure it's worth giving it a try.
