My server is on OSX El Capitan 10.11.6 I'm not sure what the additional binary is for the plugin, all I did for the helper was enable your repo and check it. When it comes to the other things required to get connect working in this version I had already installed those with brew but since I wasn't using connect I thought it wouldn't be an issue.
You shouldn't need to enable any repository. The message you're seeing is caused by the plugin failing to find the latest helper application. This would happen if you had either a spotty-custom put in some place, or the Spotty Helper Application installed. If the latter was the case, remove it. You shouldn't need it with 10.11.
