Ok, I just learned a lesson. Yes, it seems that the spotty helper is
storing those files. I need to figure out how to manage this situation
(I had ~120MB of those files, too).

Would you have an environment variable pointing to /tmp, like TMPDIR or
the like? What OS are you running?
