Okay, I believe you're right - I must have done something to the system
at some point which made it stop working.

Just tried installing LMS and Spotty clean on a new user account, after
thoroughly removing it from the old one. No luck; still the same silence
with playhead progression.

I thought it would be cool if I could just run LMS from within a Docker
container and the virtual Linux system would be spared this mysterious
problem; but my server doesn't have the right kind of CPUs for
virtualization.

Looks like I'll just image the machine back to a fresh install of OSX,
it wasn't that difficult to setup in the first place. I'll report back
with progress,
