You should take a look at SlimRemote http://www.herger.net/slim/detail.php?nr=912&kategorie=slim and TelCanto http://www.slimdevices.com/dev_telcanto.html, which work on PocketPCs. I don't think either do much caching, because they seem to be designed on the assumption that the PDA is the weaker link in processing than the server, which is usually the case. But they might be worth a look anyway. I hope you find something that works, but I strongly suspect that a low-powered PDA won't be able to give you the relief you seek from the low-powered LS.
