Yes, they are still around. Yet if it is a permissions issue, then the roll back won't help. If you don't want to get stuck with a soon to be outdated version you better try to help me solve the issue. Installing plugins manually might be much more work than you'd expect, and I would rather spend that time fixing the problem than trying to instruct people how to stick their head in the sand :-).
