I am new to the Squeezebox, but from reading the forum pages I have come to the conclusion that it is not possible to play CDs on an optical drive that is locally attached to the computer that is running the Slimserver.
I have ripped my whole CD collection to Hard Drive, so I can use the Squeezebox to play any CD in my collection without using my old CD Player. This is all fine and very convenient, my old CD Player is now just sitting there collecting dust so I can just get rid of it, right? Not really, from time to time a friend of mine comes with a CD that he/she would like to play so I still need to keep my old CD Player, although it is used very seldom. Actually, I expected to get CD Playing functionality out-of-the box, I didn't even check it before buying the Squeezebox as I expected that this migration scenario was a basic one and natural to support. But it isn't included, and since I'm not a programmer, my question goes to this community: Is there anybody developping or planning to develop this as a plugin? I am surprised to see so little talk about this functinality in this forum, I would expect others to have the same problem or have you all found some other solution to the problem? If not, I would be happy to pay for plugin that just lets me play an Audio CD on the Squeezebox. Support for downloading song title, artist and album name isn't required but would be a welcome addition. You could of course also add support for other audio formats, opening/closing drive, karaoke, ripping etc but I would be happy just being able to play my Audio CDs! Is this really hard to achieve? When I look at the plugins that people have created it seems that a basic CD player would be a lot easier to create that some of the amazing plugins that has been written for the SlimServer, but maybe that's just because I am not a programmer.
