Maybe it wanders? It's gone here now. I rebooted several times, but that did nothing. I disabled and enabled this and that (audio devices. Apparently, I have a lot), which didn't do anything either. And now suddenly it's gone. I could not reproduce the pause issue. Maybe this is all just symptoms for some other issue. I really should reinstall Windows in the near future.
