Material uses TrackStat to set a rating as, AFAIK, there is no other API for this - which is why ratings are only shown if TrackStat is installed. However, ratings are read via LMS's JSONRPC. Previous Material releases also read ratings from TrackStat - but this was removed when rating display was added to the queue. To get a TrackStat rating, I have to ask for each track's rating 1 at a time. Making, potentially, hundreds of individual TrackStat calls seemed silly, when I could just ask LMS to provide the rating value when it gives me the queue contents. I see from your signature, that you are using LSM 7.8? If so, then perhaps that is the reason for the difference?
