And I'm wondering what fresh chaos may result if Material implements a different approach. The current solution of one default player and a fallback to the top of the list is working well for me, after careful player naming choices. As opposed to fallback to last player used, which accidentally caused me to to fallback to my "All" Group player and blast out everyone in the house.
