How slow is it? The artwork handling is never as fast for artist images as for albums because for artist images iPeng first has to do a lookup request with the server to get the artwork URL while with album images it can request it directly. But after the first load it should be significantly faster and once the app is running and has requested to URLs once it should be similar. I should probably write the artwork URLs to the on-device cache as well to get rid of this additional lag.
