The version of Lame should not matter. IIRC, the latest Lame is 3.97 but the latest in iTunes to Lame (I've forgotten the precise name) is 3.96.1. I recommended that because it puts its version of Lame in the right place without you having to do anything.
bpa is right about the directories that OS X searches. AlienBBC will find mplayer if it is in /usr/local/bin, but OS X itself won't.
