You should installe the locale for de_DE - this would fix both issues.  
What system are you running SlimServer on? I just checked with a Knoppix  
(Debian based), CentOS 4.4 and RedHat 7.3 based SME server. They all have  
dozens of locale installed by default, including about five varieties of  
de_DE.
