It would be very easy to get out of step - but that is what I do when I am working on a Plugin. I install a quick version the proper way first and then work on the files directly and restart LMS each time. LMS checks the version number in the install.xml against the version number in the repo XML. If the local one is higher then it will not update. I would not recommend it as an approach for a typical installation but it can be very useful when developing/debugging/tracing.
