When I display artist photos, some number of them show up almost
immediately, and then there is a long pause -- a few minutes -- before
That's showing artist artwork when browsing artists? What re you MAI
settings? Are you pre-caching images? Do you have an artist picture
folder defined?
the rest begin to slowly appear. Server log shows a flood of messages
like this during the pause:
No message before that? This only covers about a second.

Can you check what that line is? I can't see how the line I have would
modify anything... and it's been there for 7+ years.
