I removed all '.missing' files files from the artist directory.
I unchecked the 'Download and pre-cache artist pictures from online
sources' and "Store placeholder file ("artist.missing") if artist
pictures are to be downloaded, but cannot be found" options, and did a
full rescan. Unexplainably (to me) I have artist photos for those that
didn't have any when I had the option selected.
As you've enabled "Show pictures" images are being downloaded and shown
on demand. That would be the method "can slow down browsing" is warning
about :-).
