OK, so let me say that this stuff has been remarkably stable, by and large. (this stuff == pCP, LMS, Spotty). I don't know if it had anything to do with my ssh'ing to my server today but I found later that LMS was no longer running. So I rebooted the pi (via the button in pCP). I then reconnected via ssh, and checked the date, and it is now correct. And spotty is working again.
So, the problem seemed to be rooted in the fact that the date was wrong. It's possible that the internet was out when the server was last booted. Maybe it gave up trying to set the date/time?? This was also hinted at in one of the responses. So I certainly recognized that there was a date problem when I saw those dates in the log, but I would *not* have made the connection with https connections and certificate checks, etc. So thanks everyone for helping diagnose this.
