For Vortexbox 2.4 onward your hardware has to be 64bit. If you are successfully running VB2.4 or higher you can (manually) upgrade LMS right up to the latest 8.2.x version but since the CD ripper no longer works I would go for a Pi and if you want continue to use the VB as a NAS. I am actually still running a VB2.4 as LMS server but I have hacked it about massively so that when it did do CD ripping it ripped direct to a NAS.
