It generally is ... provided things around it do not change.

For example ... new hardware from Raspberry Pi, new audio hardware.

In general though, as you have shown by still running 3.2 from nearly 4
years ago, it can be left in a corner and not updated.

However, when the time comes to update it is generally easier to update
from the previous release than something that is a few generations
behind because things might have changed in the interim that make it not
feasible to take such a big jump in one go.
