I believe it's usable, but only if the receiver can accept standard HDMI audio, which is in PCM or Bitstream format. Your D90's HDMI input is expecting I2S, and I'm assuming that's the problem. If you have an A/V receiver that accepts HDMI you could test this out. Again, I'm no expert.
