Well I tried a simpler method. Somehow I never realised there was a screensaver it defaults to Now playing when playing so never actually does anything. I changed it to digital clock (black), and now it does exactly what I was looking for. There was a simple baked in solution after all this time. Thanks for the suggestion though Michael!
