Thanks guys - you nailed it. When I pull the RPI player running squeezelite out of the group, it plays hi-res (it has a Hifiberry Digi+ pro on it - I should put that in my signature too :))
I am a little surprised the bitrate reductions happens this way though. To get the best audio quality, it should happen as late in the process as possible so immediately before sending the signal out from the server to the individual players. Indeed, this is how it works when I play back from my own music library. So I guess the Qobuz plugin is designed to ask for the lowest common bitrate. Now I know. I wonder how much effort it would be to change this. The server functionality to forward different bitrates to individual players is already there... When I have guests in the house, it is a cool feature to have all players playing the same music - a pity I then don't get hi-res in the living room where the best speakers are. But it *is* a first world problem :).
