The problem here was......two copies of squeezelite running on the same machine. Which is pretty much what LMS is trying to tell me with that error message. I didn't realise squeezelite is also installed as a service, running as the root user. As the root user it can't talk to pulseaudio, and so I can't see it pavucontrol. I run it manually as my ordinary user, which can talk to pulseaudio. They confuse the server, hence the track progress bar regularly being wrong, and the jumping on to the next track unexpectedly. Sometimes, the service crashes, leaving the copy I started working absolutely fine, until I happen to reboot the machine and the service starts again. What a ballache this was!
