CDplayer seems to bring out the worst in systems. I thought Win10 was
bad.

I've experienced Pi's USB quirks besides CD also with GSM/Mobile
dongles, often chipset related so that certain combos just fail. I have
a dish of 4 BT dongles - and eventually gave up on BT.

It is worth trying a powered USB hub and possibly older USB 2.0 found in
a drawer. Although even then I had to make a special cable which cut the
+5V line on the HUB to Pi connection - it kept the Pi alive when PSU was
unplugged.

This should be easy to fix. Metadata lookup has nothing to do with
playing the CD except initial CD TOC load gives the "key" to lookup.
Check Plugins settings is set to MusicBrainz.
The plugin just does a HTTP/GET on MusicBrainz website - so if it i
failing there is something blocking that call.
