Hi mortod - agree, the "bad" recording does look really bad (-20dB noise
floor is not very useful, but -50dB is much more like where you should
expect to end up).  From the looks of the chart this really is just
noise - so I'd associate it with e.g. using a laptop's built-in
microphone by accident instead of the external mic.

Sounds like you are doing the right thing for the "after-correction"
room measurement.  So the resulting curve should be pretty flat. 
Anything below 10Hz is spurious though, so I wonder whether your chart
is being affected by a spurious boost below that frequency (which I've
seen a couple times).  I'll post some of my own charts later for
comparison.

The "impulse_response_filtered" is the measured response, with a
sliding low-pass filter to remove some of the room effect (leaving more
of the direct-only sound).  I'm not really convinced it creates "better"
correction filters, just "different" :-)
