It's definitely possible as long as the external player makes it
possible to write a plugin that pick up these events. SlimServer has a
very open interface, so an external application can control it with
commands. 

I know of one that does exactly this from the MediaMonkey application
(I haven't tried it myself though):

Besides Moose already mentioned, you might want to take a look at the
slimfx skin. The slimfx skin makes the SlimServer web interface look
similar to the music selection in iTunes.

Could you explain a bit more about why you think the SlimServer
browse/navigation functions are clunky while winamp's aren't ?
Is it just the fact that SlimServer is shown in the browser, or is
there something about in which order you select things or how you
select things ?
