All the mplayer in AlienBBC does is play the supplied file or pipe, decode and generate a WAV stream onto stdout.
If you can get VLC to do that and to shut down down on eof or close pipe. However it would be easier long term to get mplayer working. I think it is a configure option as there are some confusing choices about RTSP.
