Yes. I did it in two steps as described on your webpage. First select
which slimserver file to install, commit that. Then when it is
installed check the enable box and commit that.

That's my opinion too.

Maybe I should try to start the slimserver manually (i.e. running the
post-init script I suppose) to see if I get any clues from the script
output.

I will also try mstaj's trick with disable/enable the slimserver in the
webgui to see if that makes the server start.
