Don't worry about the "lame" - that is only needed if you wish to transcode into MP3.
The symptoms you describe sound very like what happens if AlienBBC for 6.3 is being used. What is the name of the .exe you are using to install AlienBBC ? The problem about testing - the "alpha" options not working.
