To see the version number and the other information about mplayer, you
need to run the program from the Terminal.

First, double click on the mplayer_intel_osx.zip file to expand it.
This gives you a file, simply called mplayer, in the same directory as
the .zip file. Assuming you're using Leopard, the .zip will be by
default in the ~/Downloads/ directory (the ~ is shorthand for your home
directory, or /Users/shortname_of_your_account/).

Now, open the Terminal application and another window containing the
mplayer file. Drag mplayer to the Terminal window - this brings up the
exact location where the file is stored on your system. Without typing
anything in the Terminal, find and drag the kitesample.ra file you
downloaded previously to the same Terminal window (it is probably in
the same directory as mplayer). Then click once in the Terminal window
to activate it, and press return. The music will then play, and you'll
see all the version and other information that mplayer produces when it
runs from the Terminal.
