It seems that as soon as you click "save" on the "Services: SqueezeCenter" page, the owner gets set to "www" and the group gets set to "wheel".
I even tried setting up a test account that were part of wheel and www, but no luck. Tried Squeezecenter 7 as recommended by Kuben72 And it seems to work Looks like it's 7.0.1 - has been driving me mad - guess i can't try out the nightly builds then. :( Not sure I should have bothered - prettier, but slower interface.
