You do need to have DirectX 9.0c installed - 10 won't work. I would suggest getting the redistribution one instead of the SDK one, though. Also expand the download into a directory that is not in "program files" or some other "protected" area to actually install it from. I used c:\temp. Also run the real install (dxsetup.exe) "as administrator". This was for Windows Vista. If my experience is anything to go by I'd also make sure that you create a restore point prior to starting - just in case...
