I currently use Slimserver to deliver automated programming to our internet radio station. At present I run the server on a Mac Mini, use an SB3 to replay the audio and feed it back into the computer via an audio interface, then use Nicecast to stream to a remote Icecast 2 server. The NowPlaying plugin delivers metadata on the current track to Nicecast and thus to the streaming server.
We wish to investigate the possibility of using Slimserver to do this job on a remote server, ie completely unattended (controlled remotely via the web interface), hopefully running on the same machine as the Icecast server. To do this we need to get a stream out of Slimserver and into the Icecast server. We need to be able to play any audio file that Slimserver can play without issues, so the mp3 remote stream capability cannot be used (it does not like changes of file data rate or format). SoftSqueeze on the other hand handles this fine, but it is a full-blown application. We are hoping that this job can be done by/with a plugin or some other application and we are wondering if anyone here would be interested in writing it for us (and for anyone else who would like to do the same thing). The solution will need to deliver an MP3 stream (at least) at selectable data rate to an Icecast server for rebroadcast with as few additional steps between Slimserver and Icecast server as possible. Any additional application required needs to run unattended. The solution will also need to deliver metadata in a form that the Icecast server can transmit. It needs little in terms of controllability other than switching the feed on and off, and any configuration required to access the Icecast server if the streaming client is included in the solution. If the solution runs only on one platform it should be Linux. We don't have a vast budget but we will entertain reasonable suggestions as to cost. Anyone up for this?
