No need to go back just because of this issue. Wipe the squeezecenter folder with all its subfolders. If you still have the squeezecenter-* folder, rename this one to squeezecenter. Restart your machine and you should be up and running. In fact all the issues we're seeing are the result of a ridiculous effort to just unpack an archive file into the right place. Installing manually is so simple, but I wanted to make it even simpler. Result: tons of confusion and frustration :-(. I'd still like to understand what's going on here.
