Yes, unfortunately (but unsurprisingly) iTunes needs to be running to get the full functionality of the plugin. If you close it, the plugin will start it again.
There should be an iTunesUpdate menu in the Extras menu of the Controller? The cache I referred to is SqueezeCentre's own file cache, not the web browser's. It's either in your 'Documents' folder somewhere, or in the SqueezeCentre installation itself.
