Thanks for the reply. I've undone the $URL$ change.
I installed using the .zip file. I copied all the folders into the Squeezecenter Plugins folder as instructed and restarted SC. The three boxes under RTSP in Settings/Advanced/Filetypes are all set to Disabled - if I change them to enabled (or whatever the other entry is) and press "Apply" they immediately revert back to "Disabled" - is this the cause of the problem?
