I have a few reasons for not using UNC paths -- there are a few other
pieces to my solution (and workflow) that don't play as nicely with UNC
paths. But you're right, it's possible under most circumstances. in the
past, I've found it useful to not be tied to machine names -- mapped
drives can remain a constant no matter where the music lives.

Am not sure about the comment regarding the worth of running another
process on the server... Generally there are dozens of processes
running all the time on a Windows machine and in this case, the added
process isn't heavy in terms of resources (RAM, CPU etc.).

In my case anyway, spousal approval went way up now that everything can
be done within Media Center and I must admit I find it extra easy this
way too but of course everyone else's mileage may vary.
