IIRC There is nothing WaveInput to prevent it working with 7.1 or 7.2 (see Philip Meyer's post just before yours).
However WaveInput's install.xml file might specify that MaxVersion is 7.0.+ which results in a "Plugin Incompatible" messages. Edit install.xml with Wordpad (not Notepad) and change MaxVersion from 7.0.+ to * and restart SC.
