The default is to transcode RealAudio into Flac. Flac requires about 1500kbps @ 100% to play.
Your max reliable connection speed of 256kbps is very poor even with a wired connection so something is very wrong - either reading the test results, your PC, your network interfaces, cables or the router (is it very old ?). Are you using Homeplug, hubs, bridges, usb adaptors ? As a stopgap I suggest you disable the RTSP->Flac and RTSP->WAV filetype (see Settings/Advanced/ File Types) and then RTSP->MP3 will be used which should work with your slow network.
