I did... but I appeared to be getting forecasts further into the future
(up) or nearer to the current time (down), rather than any change in the
format of the date and time. Incidentally, it seems possible to page
forward into "blank" displays too, which is interesting :)

Indeed. I'd like to get the SDT display to use very short time and date
settings (something like "1:41, 19 Oct" would be perfect) but the
question is how? The only format strings for time and date are %1 and
%2 (according to the help in the web configuration).  The only way I've
found to shorten them down is to alter the squeezecenter default long
date and time formats, and in practice I had to alter them in the
server.prefs file by hand to get the format I wanted.

I think so (but could be wrong!). I'm not actually using any custom
displays,  just (trying to) set the "default mode" to show the type of
display I want; which it almost does, apart from those over-long time
and date fields.
