The dropout problem is (was) most likely to have been caused by a bug in the firmware FLAC decoder which had the effect that it never sent -output-buffer-underrun- events to the server. The server needs those to tell when the player has run out of data and stop for a few seconds to give it a chance to rebuffer properly. Without that you just get stuttering output.
