OK thanks, I'll look into it, reading around a bit more it seems I need to compile a specific code-base for mplayer on an ARM chip and the 'cook' mods for fixed point math since the RISC chip has no FPU and the software simulation is too slow to stream real audio at the speed the LinkStation runs at. It's more of a tight squeeze than I'd originally appreciated - will give it a go though.
