I've not installed any devices.  I do have a webcam with a microphone,
which is listed in the drop-list in the sound control panel applet, but
that's been there for a year or so.

If the computer is playing some sound (e.g. a YouTube video), this
sound is captured in that 1.48 secs interval of playback, so it was
able to capture sound for that brief period.  Is that a clue?

I'm not sure what to look for in the Task Manager.
