There is no single overall stock market index, as there are a number of
exchanges and each has various indexes. There are: NASDAQ, New York
Stock Exchange, Nikkei (Tokyo), FTSE (London), Hang Seng Index (Hong
Kong), etc. And the indexes commonly used are: Dow Jones Industrial
Average, Standard and Poors 100/500, NASDAQ Composite, etc.

Some useful indexes can be found on Yahoo's stock page:

Code:
--------------------

  ^DJI Dow Jones Industrial
  ^IXIC NASDAQ Composite
  ^GSPC S&P 500
  ^OEX S&P 100
  ^TYX 30-yr Treasury Yield
  ^N225 Nikkei 225 (Tokyo)
  ^FTSE FTSE-100 (London)
^HSI Hang Seng Index (Hong Kong)
