I'm having a similar issue. I had a free Pandora account, and I could
not get Pandora to work no matter what. After doing some searching, I
found one email list post that said that paid subscribers to Pandora
can use Softsqueeze without hardware players. I upgraded my Pandora
account from free to paid, but Squeezenetwork does not recognize my new
status yet. I called Support today and the rep told me that he was not
sure what the lag is between the Squeezenetwork and the Pandora account
servers (it ought to be real-time, but I'm here to tell you it's not),
so I was told to check back on Monday.

He also said that the new software player that comes with Squeezecenter
7.3.1 (no longer called Softsqueeze, I think he said it's called
"Squeezeplayer" now or something like that) can indeed play Pandora by
itself. So now, I'm prepping my network and server for a new
installation. I'll post another update after I re-install the latest
version of SC as well as check to see when my status is changed from
free Pandora to paid Pandora.
