You don't want to connect fluorescent lights to lamp modules, but the appliance modules work fine -- we've been using CF bulbs with X10 for years. I've got both Radio Shack and X10 appliance modules, and they work OK except for the loud relay click. Insteon's appliance modules, while 6x more expensive than x10 gear on eBay, are virtually silent. It looks like you should be able to get a serial adapter & firecracker for about $15 - $20 from ebay, BTW.
