whoops! should have been more clear when I posted originally. I'm a
native English speaker.  That said, I think it's a pretty subtle
difference between hail and ice pellets.

Anyway, I'm too late - looks like that Wikipedia article covers the
"differences".

We call it Sleet in the US (or at least Minneapolis), but Ice Pellets
will do. (it gets the point across).  I think of Sleet occurring in
concert with freezing rain.

I'm sure whatever the translation of "hail" would be would do just fine
if there aren't other more literal translations.
