Thanks for the quick suggestion. However, I confirmed that the sample rate is 44.1 KHz, so that does not seem to be a factor.
With further investigation, I have observed the same behavior with at least one other album ... and a common factor is that both were digitised as 'Mono' (single track) in Audacity. Exporting to MP3 seems to work fine with SoftSqueeze (and all other players), but FLAC seems to fail (play double speed) with SoftSqueeze (only).
