iPeng obviously has not finished synchronizing the database. That's why you only have artists to g and that's probably also why it takes so long to open an artist, the server simply responds slowly. Please let iPeng finish the database sync (as I said: you will know it did when it starts to load the artwork for the albums). This is especially important since as long as the sync is not finished, it will re-start the sync on every start. With your database size and the slow server you might have to enable "prevent standby" in settings to keep the iPod from turning iPeng off.
